So here I am on Saturday 18th October 2008 at home fixing a broken fence when it struck me, no not the fence, a thought!!
Last year my Mom died after a long struggle with cancer, while in Hospice I told her I would run the Sunday race in her honour, some forumites from this forum put money down for each kilometer I would do to create a small amount for Hospice.
So as it would happen my Mom died on the Friday and there was no doubt about it I would do the Sunday race now not only to honour her but also to remember her. We collects a few thousand Rand which was paid to Hospice.
Okay so what hit me….well Sunday’s date was 19 October 2008 a year after my Mom died and it was the same race being held. I had to do it so a mad scramble to get the flags made.
Sunday morning dawned and I headed off to the Chatsworth Stadium, dreading this race and for good reason, check the race profile in the profile section.
06h00 came and off we went climbing and climbing, for once it was not too hot and half way through the race the clouds rolled in giving us protection from the KZN sunlight. I got lots of comment, all good, from fellow runners and came into the stadium to applause. Phew chick flick type of stuff, any finished the race and honoured Mom’s memory.
For once my lucky draw number was called, well what they were doing was calling three different numbers and the first one there would get the prize. They called the first one and I heard the shouting from just behind me as this person started to run to collect, they called the second number and then the third which was mine. Well I did what Clem Simpson taught me, serious negative split and I got there first to get a camping fold up chair…not too shabby.
